An issue that is long overdue for a solution is a law to protect public school teachers and administrators from abuse from unruly students. This week we heard of another grade school administrator who was kicked and hit by a student in a Washington elementary school. With the “hands off” policy in effect here, and probably in most public schools in the state, a teacher or administrator can’t “touch” a student. The students are protected. Teachers and administrators are not. They are the victims of student abuse. Usually, if a teacher or administrator raises a hand, even in self-protection, they are the guilty ones and lose their jobs. These unruly students and their parents know the law and school policies. Often when they complain, they hint at a possible lawsuit. There are problem children who the public schools should not be burdened with; those students need to be in special schools. Some probably should be in mental institutions. The law that public schools must accept and keep any child is wrong. Parents of these rowdy students are given some relief in caring for their child by sending him or her to school, where the burden falls on the schools. The schools aren’t allowed to discipline them.A Teacher/Administrator Protection Act is needed. Our lawmakers should remedy this situation by bringing reforms to student abuse against teachers and administrators. They need protection. The other students also should be protected from these out-of-control children.
