A Warrenton High School student and FFA member earned praise from volunteers at a local food pantry thanks to her donation of 110 pounds of meat from a hog she raised for the Warren County Fair.Marley Fowler, an incoming junior, gave the hog to the St. Vincent de Paul Society Food Pantry at Holy Rosary Church.Volunteer Joyce Hollaway said the donation will make a positive impact on the low-income families who receive help from the pantry.“This will be such a treat for them,” she said. “We don’t get a whole lot of meat.”The only cost to the pantry was having the animal processed, she said.Fowler showed two hogs at the Warren County Fair this year. She said it was actually her first year showing hogs. One of her animals was sold during the annual Fair livestock auction, but each exhibitor is only allowed to sell one. When wondering what to do with the second hog, Fowler said donating it seemed like the right thing to do. She thought of Joyce and her husband, Lonnie Hollaway, family friends who volunteer for the St. Vincent de Paul Society.“Since it wasn’t needed for me, I liked that I could give it to someone who did need it,” said Fowler, who dropped off the meat Friday, July 13. While helping move packages of pork into a freezer, Lonnie commented that not a lot of young people show such generosity to others.St. Vincent de Paul Society is a faith-based organization that helps low-income families with emergency needs. Donations can be made by calling Holy Rosary Church, 636-456-3698.Those in need of St. Vincent de Paul Society’s services can receive help by calling the same phone number and dialing ext. 7.Warren County Fair livestock coordinator Franci Schwartz said several other charitable organizations benefited from livestock contributions this year. Buyers at the livestock auction chose to donate animals to four local programs.Wright City Food Pantry will receive meat from a lamb donated by A&C Logging and Hauling, as well as a steer donated by State Rep. Bryan Spencer.Turning Point domestic violence shelter will receive meat from two hogs, donated by Peoples Bank & Trust together with First State Community Bank and Missouri Bank.Agape Food Pantry will receive meat from a hog donated by Laborers Local 660, which Schwartz said has been donating animals for several years. The Fair livestock organization itself also received three animal donations, a steer from Aiello Homes and one goat each from the Warrenton and Wright City Veterinary Clinics. Schwartz said those donations provide funding for the livestock program.
