The yellow brick road will lead into Diekroeger Park in Wright City this weekend.
The annual Strassenbash festival will be held this Friday, Sept. 17, and Saturday, Sept. 18, in Wright City. The theme for this year is “Wonderful Wizard of Oz,” commemorating the 100th anniversary since the book was released.
The annual festival is sponsored by the Wright City Area Chamber of Commerce.
Similar to past years, the entertainment features a wide variety of activities for all ages, including live music, queen coronation, a baby show, parade and washer tournament.
“This year we have numerous vendors and a variety of food,” Chairman Karl Finke said. “We also have brought in two great bands.
“We would like to exceed last year’s attendance. We’re trying to get a younger crowd, but we also have diverse music for others.”
Strassenbash will feature live bands on both nights. Mindspin will perform Friday, while American Idle, formerly Boone Project, will play on Saturday. Both bands, which will perform from 7-11 p.m., play a wide range of music that should appeal to all ages.
Residents are encouraged to line the streets for Saturday’s parade beginning at 11 a.m. The parade route begins at Ruge Park and ends at Diekroeger Park. Top floats will be recognized at 12:30 p.m.
Other featured events include the Person of the Year announcement on Friday at 8 p.m. and the queen coronation on Saturday at 6 p.m.
Finke encourages area residents to take advantage of the free event. There is no admission fee or charge for many of the events held throughout the weekend.
“I’m looking forward to everyone having a good time and having an opportunity to socialize with their neighbors,” Finke said. “Everyone is staying closer to home because of the economy. It’s not too often you can see bands on back to back nights for free.”
Friday’s events begin at 4 p.m. when the booths and vendors open. At 6 p.m., the Missouri Army National Guard Honor Guard will perform.
On Saturday, a 5K run/walk will be held at 8 a.m. beginning at the park with booths and vendors set to open at 11 a.m. Kids activities will begin at 1:30 p.m.. From 1-5 p.m., a DJ will play music in the beer garden.
Multiple events will begin at 2 p.m., including the queen dance, a washer tournament and pedal tractor pull.
The baby show contest begins at 4 p.m. with registration opening at 3 p.m. Babies may only wear a plain T-shirt and diaper. The top three finishers in each class will be recognized.
At 5:30 p.m., a drawing for a bike giveaway will be held.
Food and beverages will be available for purchase from several organizations throughout the weekend. For more information on Strassenbash, visit www.wrightcitychamber.com or call 636-745-7855.
