An alert Missouri trooper helped recover a stolen vehicle that led to the arrest of an Illinois man on Jan. 27.The suspect, 24-year-old Chris A. Spates, of East St. Louis, Ill., was charged with first-degree tampering with a motor vehicle.The trooper responded to Flying J around 10:56 p.m. after a report of a stolen vehicle being in the area. The officer observed Spates standing next to the car while pumping gas. Spates approached a female, got into her vehicle and they left, according to the probable cause statement. A traffic stop was initiated in Jonesburg and Spates was taken into custody.A review of surveillance cameras showed Spates was driving the car when he pulled into the gas station, the officer reported.Crime
