Drawing everything but net for the first three quarters, Ty Davis was desperate to regain his touch from the field. He would find it just in time to help his Wright City teammates to a 47-45 come-from-behind victory over Clopton on Friday.“With my shots not falling, I just tried not to let it go to my head and affect my confidence,” said Davis. “I had to find my way out of the slump.”Trailing by seven late in the third quarter, the Wildcats unleashed a 9-0 run capped off by consecutive baskets from Davis.Senior Bret Noble, who had also exhibited uncharacteristic shooting woes, put Wright City ahead 37-35 after four consecutive transition layups. Both Davis and Noble scored more points in the fourth quarter than they had during the first three quarters combined. On a night when very little was going right, the Wildcats turned to the few that were.“We had a lot of things go against us, but it gives us confident to know we can still find a way to win,” said Halteman. “We outplayed them down the stretch, and it paid off.”Constantly swapping leads, the Wildcats never let Clopton escape its grasp.Wright City opened with a 5-0 run, and it would be the largest lead for either team until the second half.Locked in a 10-10 tie after the first quarter, Halteman had to improvise after seeing his main sharpshooters were off target.“We can’t always control if the shots are going in, but we played really good defense and that really made the difference in the game,” said Halteman.Senior Chance Ludy knocked down a three-pointer to push the Wildcats ahead 19-15, but Clopton closed out the half strong to lead 21-20.The Hawks began finding open lanes for its cutters in the third quarter, building a seven point advantage. They led 33-28 after three periods, in the beginning stages of Wright City’s rally.“We just decided to be more aggressive in the fourth quarter,” said Davis. “We had kind of laid back in the third, so we decided to put more pressure on their guards.”With their perimeter game not appearing as reliable as most nights, the Wildcats had to find alternate ways to score. In the waning moments, they would rely on points in the paint and trips to the line.“Usually we shoot threes, but with those not falling as much we had to take it in more and try to draw contact,” said Davis.Wright City led 46-43 with 1:52 remaining and would find themselves at high risk on several occasions, as each team essentially bailed out the other. Clopton closed to within one after a pair of free throws, and the Wildcats would come up short on three attempts at the charity stripe.Davis and his teammates saw the game flash before their eyes with seven seconds remaining, as the Hawks failed to convert on a wide open layup and clanked a free throw of their own.“That was a scary moment,” recalled Davis. “I was surprised they missed that layup.”Wright City escaped the final tense moments with senior Christian Thompson knocking down the final point at the line.“This gives us confidence going into the next game,” said Davis, who finished with 14 points.Thompson led the Wildcats with 13 points, while Noble added 11 points.“We’ve had a lot of game like this coming back and forth,” said Halteman. “Some of them probably shouldn’t have been, but this was a good team, and we knew we weren’t going to beat them by 20. The more times we’re getting experience in these games, the more we’ll be prepared the rest of the way,” said Halteman.Wright City will open the Class 3 District 6 Tournament on Monday at 4:45 p.m. at Duchesne High School.WILDCATS RALLY IN FOURTH QUARTERDerrick Forsythe photo.
