St. Charles West showed why it will be one of the top contenders for a Gateway Athletic Conference crown in defeating Warrenton 10-0 on Tuesday.
An injury-depleted lineup for Warrenton struggled on both sides of the ball. Warrenton Head Coach Amy Wargowsky said the players replacing those injured will have to grow up quickly and gain experience.
“I have a lot of girls who need to get that experience, and I know they will,” Wargowsky said.
The scoring began quickly for West. In the third minute, Regan Douglas scored the first goal of the game. The senior struck again three minutes later to make the score 2-0.
West’s offense controlled the ball the entire first half while Warrenton had no shots on goal in the first 40 minutes. Warrenton goalie Alexis Hickl had 14 saves in the first half, but West took advantage in dictating the pace early on.
Wargowsky said West showed why it is tops in the conference.
“They have six starters who have played varsity since their freshman year,” she said. “It’s a tough team to open up against with our inexperienced players,” she said.
After trailing 6-0 into the second half, Warrenton again struggled defensively. West scored again three minutes into the half and twice more seven minutes later.
“We just need to work on finishing when we get the ball,” Wargowsky said. “We need to take our chances when we can, and contain. We have things we need to work on and we know what they are.”
The final goal came when Audrey Andrzejewski found herself all alone for the easy goal to end the game. The junior had two goals in the game. Freshman Courtney Schreiber also chipped in three goals
