In honor of the 200th anniversary of Mary Shelly’s “Frankenstein,” the Scenic Regional Library in Warrenton is hosting two Frankenstein-themed evenings Oct. 23-24.The first evening, 6-7 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 23, is a discussion about the book and its long, strong hold on society.“I thought this would be an interesting topic to bring to the library. It fits in with October, covers the scary factor, and it’s also been 200 years since it was written — and people still talk about it today,” said Kerry Christian, adult programmer at the library. The book still inspires countless variations of the man-makes-a-monster story through writings and films.Professor and Chair of English at Webster University, Sheila Hwang, Ph.D., will lead the discussion. Hwang will talk about the deeper concepts of the story that have weathered two centuries. The second evening, 6-7 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 24, features a showing of “Mary Shelly,” a film about the author’s life and inspirations starring Elle Fanning. Snacks and punch with a scary theme will be available. The author was in her late teens when she wrote the book.“Mary Shelley’s life is fascinating, and makes for a great topic of discussion,” said Christian. Both events will be held at the Warrenton branch, 912 S. State Highway 47, Warrenton. Register for either event or both events by stopping by the branch, visiting scenicregional.com or calling 636-456-3321.Scenic Regional Library logo
