Motorists on Highway A in Warren County will be required to slow down, at least for now.
The speed limit on Highway A between Interstate 70 and Truxton was reduced from 55 mph to 35 mph this summer during road repairs. The repairs are complete but the 35 mph speed limit remains, a Missouri Department of Transportation (MoDOT) representative said, because more work could be coming.
Erik Maninga, MoDOT area engineer for Lincoln, Montgomery and Warren counties, said as Warren County was upgrading county roads that connect to Highway A, the heavy trucks caused damage to the highway.
“When they carried the (materials) out there, Highway A started falling apart,” Maninga said.
When the county finished its project, MoDOT made repairs on Highway A.
But the Highway A project isn’t necessarily complete, so the speed limit isn’t back to 55 mph.
“We’re still watching Route A. The county has told us they plan to do more work (on their roads). Once they start, we could see similar failures on Highway A like we did this summer,” Maninga said.
He said Warren County is expected to pave county roads off Highway A.
“Once they are done paving those roads, we’ll return the speed limit to 55,” Maninga said.
Speeders could be ticketed.
County Road Department Supervisor Gary Ruether said if weather cooperates, paving could start Sept. 24 and be completed at the end of October.
