Sophomore captain, senior drive: David Ross leads the way for Warrenton soccer

Posted

One look at David Ross’ resume and you’d swear he’s a senior.

Ross, a sophomore at Warrenton, already possesses a lengthy resume that includes membership in several clubs and organizations.

Not only that, Ross serves as one of the Warriors’ soccer captains.

Senior forward and one of the other co-captains, Tyler Scruggs, said that, knowing who Ross is, none of his maturity, which seems beyond his years, is at all surprising.

“He’s the young heart of this team,” Scruggs said. “He’s going to be very good in the next few years. He’s a captain now, which is very impressive for a sophomore and he’s only going to get better. He learns quickly and he improves every day.”

For his part, the chance to be considered a leader means the world to him.

“To be a captain is an honor,” Ross said. “This is such a great team with such a great group of guys. The fact that I get to be captain and be one of the leaders for this team is an honor. The older guys here have taught me to work hard every single day and to stay disciplined and to never give up. That is (a message that I want to share).”

So far this season, he’s already tallied two goals and three assists, including the game-winner against Pacific on September 22.

The results come after a freshman season in which he tallied two goals.

Warrenton Coach Jake Brown said Ross’ efforts extend into the classroom and other parts of school.

“I have two senior and one sophomore captains; that’s pretty special,” Brown said. “Just knowing that he’s going to come back next year means a lot. He’s involved in so much at school, whether it’s FCA or DECA; he just does an all-around great job at being a student-athlete.”

Even though he’s a captain, that doesn’t absolve Ross of putting in the work every day and doing his job as a player.

“I see my role as being a workhorse,” Ross said. “Along with Gavin Thompson, we want to put it all together in the midfield. I want to do the job to win the ball, make runs and help the team with my work ethic.”

As Brown said, Ross’ work ethic spills into the school.

Not only is he a fantastic student, but he is also involved in DECA, FCA, speech and debate, and Student Council.

“It can be tough sometimes, but I enjoy being a part of the Warrenton community,” Ross said. “Representing the school and the team, I just do it with my heart and being composed. On the soccer field, I just want to not get too high. I want to stay level-headed and keep my guys in check, as well.”

That level-headedness will serve Ross well in the years to come, he said.

“I don’t feel pressure (about the future); I’m just excited for everything that’s to come,” Ross said. “We’re going to have a lot of success and it’s going to be exciting. We’ve got plenty to look forward to the rest of this season and in the future.”
