A number of strong individual performances helped the Warrenton baseball team earn six spots on the All-GAC team following a 17-11 season. The Warriors had four first-team selections, with two landing on the second team.Ben Stephens — Junior was chosen as a first-team pitcher for the second consecutive season. He threw a team-high 62 innings, managing a 1.79 ERA while allowing just 16 earned runs. Stephens struck out 75 batters and walked 20. He finished 6-4 as a starter.“There were a number of pitchers nominated for that honor, so that makes it even more special that he was chosen from such a talented group,” said Coach Eric Burle. “That overall record doesn’t necessarily give him a tremendous amount of credit.”Brandon Moeller — Senior earned first-team honors after batting a team-best .451 with 37 hits. He was responsible for 16 RBIs and scored 23 runs.Moeller pitched while also seeing an increased role at shortstop during his final season. He sported a 2.23 ERA through 59 innings, striking out 70 and walking nine.“He came into our program as a pitcher first, but he’s developed into our best offensive player the last two years,” said Burle. “His hitting numbers were pretty remarkable. He ended up getting the most votes of any infielder in our conference.”Dallas Johnson — Sophomore was selected to the first team as a catcher after batting .395 with 30 hits. Johnson collected 21 RBIs and scored 31 runs, aided by his 14 doubles.“He was one that other teams would pin-point in our lineup to pitch tough against,” said Burle. “He really had a knack for finding home plate. I think that says a lot about him and the guys behind him.”Hunter Russell — Sophomore garnered first-team honors as an outfielder during his first season on the varsity level.“Hunter got thrust into the lead-off position and really matured as a player from last year,” said Burle. “He learned how to compete early and get deep into the count. He was great at finding ways to get on base.”Hunter Capstick — Sophomore was named to the second team for his efforts as an outfielder and as the Warriors’ second-best hitter. Capstick batted .422 with 35 hits, including nine doubles. He recorded 16 RBIs and scored 23 runs.“Hunter was kind of a converted infielder,” explained Burle. “He was able to be a defensive threat with his throwing arm. As a first-year varsity player he went from being the five or six hitter and slid into that No. 2 spot. He definitely has lot of upside.”Corey Eckenfels — Senior was recognized as a second-team utility player after taking over the starting first base role. He batted .211 with 12 hits and 11 RBIs. He had one of the team’s better on-base percentages at .392.“Corey hit into some tough luck, but he did a great job of putting the ball in play,” said Burle. “His on-base average was a big help, and he really settled in defensively at first base as well.”JOHNSON NAMED FIRST TEAMDerrick Forsythe Photo.
