By Susan MillerRecord Staff WriterMarthasville Elementary will undergo an expansion this summer, with the addition of six new classrooms. The Washington School Board last Wednesday approved the low bid of $949,940 from Lamb Construction, O’Fallon, for the project. The addition is being funded by a no-tax increase bond issue approved by voters last April. The six new classrooms should take care of space needs now and in the future at the elementary school, said Superintendent Dr. Lori VanLeer. The additional space also will allow the district to offer a satellite preschool at that site, she said.Board President Scott Byrne said he did not feel comfortable with the subcontractor listed for the mechanical work. The board agreed and the contractor was asked to go with the next lowest bid for that work.Byrne did not name the company, but said the business has been cited in the past for not paying prevailing wage. He also said he was unsure if the contractor provided ongoing training for his employees.Fencing work also was pulled out of the bid. VanLeer said the district will review fencing needs with the contractor at a later time.An alternate project bid as part of the overall project was for parking improvements and playground work.VanLeer told the board she asked and the contractor agreed to hold the price for that work, which totals about $112,000, for 60 days to give her time to review other capital project needs in the district and determine priority. That work could always be done at a later date, VanLeer said, but it would be more costly.Byrne said all of the bids were competitive and he was “extremely pleased” with how the numbers came in.“I am in the construction business and these are great, great numbers, we are very fortunate,” he said.Construction on the new addition will begin in June with a target completion date of mid-December, school officials said. The district received a total off 11 bids for the project.Six new classrooms to be built in Marthasville
