Siteman Cancer Center is continuing to grow, with an expansion of cancer services and facilities that will begin soon at Barnes-Jewish St. Peters Hospital in St. Charles County. The $13.1 million project will expand the existing site from 19,500 square feet to 30,750 square feet, with scheduled completion in November 2016.The Siteman St. Peters project is the first major expansion of the facility, which opened in 2005. The renovations will nearly double the patient capacity at the St. Peters location and improve the patient and family experience. The number of exam rooms will increase from eight to 20 and chemotherapy infusion stations will expand from 11 to 32. This additional space will also accommodate the growth of the medical, radiation and surgical oncology practices. While this expansion represents a major addition to the Siteman building and to Barnes-Jewish St. Peters Hospital, the project centers its focus on the needs of the patient“Our mission is to improve the health of the people and communities we serve,” said Larry Tracy, president of Barnes-Jewish St. Peters and Progress West Hospitals.“This expansion will allow us to provide nationally recognized cancer care to even more people right here close to home.”To allow for uninterrupted service during construction, Siteman-St. Peters will utilize the adjoining medical office space and outpatient surgery center. Barnes-Jewish St. Peters Hospital, part of BJC HealthCare, is contributing $10.6 of the $13.1 million to the Siteman-St. Peters expansion. Washington University School of Medicine is providing the rest. The St. Charles County project is part of a larger growth plan for Siteman Cancer Center that also includes simultaneous expansion of Siteman’s main campus at Washington University Medical Center and at Siteman Cancer Center–South County in south St. Louis County. Expansion at each site will include additional physicians and health care staff to serve the growing number of patients seeking specialized cancer care within these communities.Timothy Eberlein, MD, Siteman director and head of the Department of Surgery at the School of Medicine, said the improvements demonstrate the commitment of Siteman and its partners — Barnes-Jewish St. Peters Hospital, Barnes-Jewish Hospital and Washington University School of Medicine — to the health of residents of Missouri and beyond.“As one of the largest cancer care providers in the nation, Siteman Cancer Center offers the most advanced care possible,” said Eberlein, who also is the Bixby Professor of Surgery and Spencer T. and Ann W. Olin Distinguished Professor at the Washington University School of Medicine. “Our patients deserve the best, and with additional physicians and space we can continue providing exceptional care.”“These significant renovations in St. Charles County and in the greater St. Louis Metropolitan area speak to the commitment of Siteman Cancer Center, BJC HealthCare and Washington University Medical School to enhance care and ensure convenient patient access across the larger St. Louis region,” Tracy added.Siteman treats 43,000 people each year, including 9,000 newly diagnosed patients, at its four locations.
