Students in the Wright City R-II School District will see significant changes in technology, staff and other resources when they return to school on Aug. 11.Superintendent David Buck says enrollment is up to 1,554, an increase of 36 students over last year.He is excited about the advancement and renovations that have taken place since the conclusion of the 2015-16 school year.The district will begin providing each high school student with a Chromebook on a one-to-one ratio, with the school having obtained 470 computers.The district also added a behavior specialist and special education teacher to its staff to address students with special needs.Additionally, Massive Online Open Courses (MOOCs) have been added to the high school for students to earn credits.“These can range from electrical engineering to medical ethics, greatly increasing the course offering for our district,” said Buck.The district has also implemented several initiatives, including the Lunch Buddy Program, Care to Learn and Positive Coaching to better serve students’ needs.In terms of physical changes, the parking lot and locker rooms at the high school have been updated, while handicap accessibility was expanded at East Elementary.Also, a committee will convene in September to begin working on the district’s new five-year plan. Those meetings are expected to conclude in the late winter or spring.“Our goals remain the same, sans the change from implement to create and implement a five-year facility plan,” said Buck. “Some of the strategies will change. The board of education discussed at the July board meeting and will vote on their proposed changes at the August 18th meeting,” said Buck.Prior to the first day of school, the district will be holding several events, including an open house on Aug. 8 for Early Childhood Center from 5:30 to 7 p.m. and the middle school from 6 to 7:30 p.m.On Aug. 9 kindergarten will have an open house from 5 to 6 p.m. and first grade will have an open house from 6:15 to 7:15 p.m.Back to School
