Sidewalk improvements on Depot Street moving forward in Marthasville

Sidewalk improvements are moving forward in Marthasville and Mayor David Lange provided an update on the project on Depot Street at the board of aldermen’s May 21 meeting.

Lange said the city had received contract easements from Ameren and was working on obtaining an easement with one of the property owners on the street to move the power lines as crews look to begin work on the sidewalks on Depot Street.

The board approved improvements to the sidewalks on Depot Street and some of the adjacent streets at their March 19 meeting.

They intend to realign and repave the sidewalk on the western half of Depot Street between One Street and Two Street, the eastern half of the block between Two Street and Three Street along with the entirety of the blocks between Three Street and Five Street and extending onto the first block of Five Street.

They are also working to repair and extend the existing curb on the south side of the street from Four Street to One Street.

They are still in the preliminary stages of the project and are obtaining easements to move utilities so city crews can get started on work before they go out to bid for a contractor.

City officials said they had not yet budgeted the project and were unsure of what estimated costs would be.

Lange said they had a surveyor mark the street corners so they could work to handle some of the right-of-way issues with the sidewalk.

They had noted at the March 19 meeting that several of the buildings on Depot Street are actually built on the city’s right-of-way, although they do not intend to move any of the buildings.

“We’re looking at that, trying to work out where we can put the sidewalk either right on the property line or right behind it, … it’s gonna be a handful,” said Lange.

He said the improvements to the sidewalks on Depot Street and the expansion of Five Street remain the city’s top priorities.
