Shots don’t convert to goals

Record Staff WriterThe improvements were evident but the results were the same for the Warrenton soccer team compared to its earlier meeting against St. Charles West this season. The Warriors performed more competitively this time, falling 4-2 to the GAC foe at home on Tuesday. “There were a lot of positive things coming out of this game,” said Head Coach John Schulte. “Unfortunately, we didn’t get the score that we wanted, but the kids really stepped up and played a lot better than in the past.”The score wasn’t indicative of the Warriors’ ball control and opportunities around the box, most of which they were unable to convert.“We had some chances, which is great, because we’ve been working on creating those opportunities,” said Schulte. “If we stay persistent with those, then goals are going to come.”Sophomore Nick Forrest netted the Warriors’ first goal, streaking in from the left side to place the ball out of the keeper’s reach at the 11:00 mark of the first period.“We’ve been working on that in practice — on hitting our forwards and hitting their feet and having those guys spin off for a give-and-go, and that’s exactly what happened,” said Schulte.“It worked exactly like it had in practice. (Dillen) Mayfield was able to give a great ball right back to him. Nick takes a touch or two and hits the shot in the corner.”Forrest’s efforts put Warrenton in control until the final minute of the half, when St. Charles West weaved its way through a 3-on-1 situation to convert against the odds and notch the contest at 1-1.The visiting team gained the edge seven minutes into the second half, becoming the aggressor for a short time. Moments later, St. Charles West nearly converted again, but a leaping save by goalie Matt Dildine kept the Warriors within reach.“They came out with a lot more intensity and hustle, and I think that kind of pressure hurt us a little bit,” said Schulte. “We weren’t able to connect with passes, and they were getting all over us to give a little shove or push as we were getting ready to kick a ball.”St. Charles West moved ahead 3-1 at the 24:07 mark by beating the Warrenton defender and placing the ball outside the reach of a diving Dildine. The Warriors had another pair of opportunities around the 15:00 mark but couldn’t connect.“We were able to play the ball in a lot of areas that we wanted to in order to be dangerous,” said Schulte. “It was great to see us getting the ball in the box and getting shots on goal.”With 6:13 remaining, St. Charles West secured its win with an impressive maneuvering run through multiple defenders to climb to a 4-1 lead.Mayfield, a senior, punched in the Warriors second goal in the final two minutes, topping off a stellar night according to his coach.“Mayfield played an excellent game,” said Schulte. “He had three or four chances where he put a shot on, and it was a little wide or somebody blocked it. It was a great individual effort by him.”The Warriors are now 2-8-1 and will travel to Fatima on Monday and St. Charles on Tuesday.
