The Montgomery County Water Supply District reported the theft of $80,000 that was withdrawn from the district’s bank account in a fraud scheme involving checks Tuesday, April 28.
According to Warren County Sheriff Kevin Harrison, three checks totaling $80,000 were cashed by currently unknown suspect or suspects. Harrison said other checks were also attempted to be cashed but those transactions were caught in time and not processed. He said the attempted thefts totaled $96,000.
Harrison said someone apparently manufactured fake checks on the water district’s account and cashed those checks at area banks. Harrison said that his office is currently investigating the crime and is in the process of obtaining bank records via subpoenas for information on the specific times and locations where the checks were cashed and to possibly obtain any video footage of the incidents.
He did say that the water district was reimbursed the funds stolen in the fraud scheme.
