Shelter Insurance presents award to Hysong

Chris Hysong, a math teacher at West Middle School in Columbia, has received a $2,000 Outstanding Contributor Award from the Shelter Insurance Foundation.Shelter Insurance is West Middle School’s partner in the Columbia Public Schools’ Partners in Education program. The award was presented to Hysong at a surprise ceremony in his classroom on Monday, May 4.The Outstanding Contributor Award is presented each year to a faculty member of West Middle School in observance of Columbia Public School’s Partners in Education Week. The honor recognizes an instructor who has made a significant contribution toward furthering the role of education. The award recipient is nominated by students and parents and is selected by the West staff.Matt Moore, executive vice president of Shelter Insurance, presented the award certificate and $2,000 honorarium to Hysong.“Chris was chosen from a very competitive pool of nominees and selected based on criteria including teaching philosophy, interpersonal relations with students and faculty, extracurricular activities and community involvement,” Moore said.Hysong is an eighth-grade math teacher who currently teaches pre-algebra, algebra, geometry and algebra II. He began his career as a University of Missouri Teaching Fellow in 2007-2008 at West Junior High School (now West Middle School). He has eight years of teaching experience at West, including his Fellow year. In addition to teaching duties, Hysong sponsors the Math Club. This year, his sixth-grade math team placed second in the state competition of the Missouri Council of Teachers of Mathematics.
