People who are following the presidential election closely, and many are not tuned in because of the candidates, have noticed that Hillary Clinton, the Democratic candidate and feminist, has been mostly silent on the sexual accusations voiced against Donald Trump, the Republican candidate.Even the liberal New York Times, which favors Clinton, had a front page story Sunday about “Clinton Treads Lightly Amid Furor Over Trump.” A champion of feminist causes, The Times said Clinton at times has been an imperfect messenger for the cause. “That has never been more apparent than now, as her old missteps and her husband’s history have effectively paralyzed her during a moment of widespread outrage,” the New York newspaper said. She has left it up to the Obamas, Michelle and Barack, to speak for her. When the subject comes up about women and Trump, Clinton quickly changes the subject. She doesn’t want to get into Bill’s infidelities, which undoubtedly would be given more publicity. Bill’s womanizing before and during the time he was in the White House put him ahead of all other presidents in that category, and that includes the sexual adventures of Jack Kennedy. It has put Hillary in an awkward position. “Now, when the collective voice of American women and victims of sexual assault seem to be letting out a cathartic scream, Mrs. Clinton has deferred to another First Lady to speak for her,” The Times article reported. In a speech last week, Hillary said she takes no satisfaction in what is being said about Trump’s actions with women. We are entering the home stretch of a strange presidential election in which members of both parties aren’t happy with their candidates. Let’s hope four years from now that we, the voters, don’t have to suffer through another election of this type. This has become the Year of Worry about America’s future.
