Sex offender found guilty for failure to register

By Tim SchmidtRecord Managing EditorA 31-year-old Warrenton man, accused of having sex with a 14-year-old girl, was found guilty last week of failing to register as a sex offender.Michael A. Brown, of the 1100 block of Lilac, was found guilty by Circuit Judge Wes Dalton during a bench trial held Thursday. He will be sentenced on Sept. 2.A third felony charge for second-degree statutory rape remains pending against Brown.A jury trial was scheduled to be held Thursday, but it was waived by Brown.He is scheduled to appear in court on the rape charge on Aug. 5, according to online court records. He has been ordered to not have contact with the victim or her family and friends.Warren County deputies said Brown last registered as a sex offender with the sheriff’s department on July 10, 2012. At that time, he denied that he maintained a Facebook account and did not list his cellphone number as the one the victim used to contact him, according to the probable cause statement.Deputies reported that Brown and the female girl engaged in sex in his car during an encounter on Kristy Drive in the winter of 2011-2012. The victim told police that she had known Brown for about a year and had contact with him on his cellphone and on his Facebook account.She told deputies that on Sept. 10, 2012, during a meeting with Brown, he touched her thighs and hips and tried to make her kiss him. She refused and told him to stop, according to a probable cause statement.Deputies located Brown on Highway F near Kristy Drive around 3 p.m. on Sept. 10, and learned that he was in the area to meet the victim. Brown told authorities he thought the girl was 17, according to a probable cause statement.On Sept. 13, the victim participated in a recorded phone call with Brown, who indicated that he knew the girl was a juvenile since the time that he had met her.Authorities said Brown was convicted in February 2002 of statutory sodomy and rape of an 11-year-old girl in St. Louis County. According to online court records, Brown pleaded guilty to two counts of statutory sodomy and one count of rape and was sentenced to 10 years in the Missouri Department of Corrections on each count to run concurrently.Michael A.
