As the season opener approaches, Warrenton Volleyball Coach Randy Kindschuh is hopeful his team can reap the harvest of the work it has put in up to this point.
The Warriors return seven starters following a 17-15-2 season and have their sights set on the GAC Conference title.
“That’s our goal every season,” said Kindschuh. “We’d like to go further in districts. We’ve got a team this year that if people do the jobs they’re assigned to do, we feel like we have a chance of advancing beyond districts.”
Warrenton will be led by returning first-team all-GAC selection Morgan Frye.
“She’s definitely our go-to player,” said Kindschuh. “She’s been the leader throughout preseason, so we’re expecting big things from her.”
Ashley Pullen will be taking her talents to the right side as a hitter.
The Warriors boast three senior middle hitters, including Jazzy McCuskey, Faith Wenzel and Cassidy Haller.
“All of them are pretty much equal as far as what they can give us,” said Kindschuh.
Warrenton will be looking to senior Allie Gerard at the setter position, as she moves up from the junior varsity ranks.
The Warriors will also be welcoming back junior Abby Hammerberg.
“Our varsity will be comprised of mostly juniors and seniors,” said Kindschuh. “We have a couple sophomore middles who I expect to do some big things.”
Additionally, Kindschuh is expecting Josie Schipper to be a major contributor.
“We’ve moved her over to the left side, and she’s doing fantastic things,” said Kindschuh. “She’s going to be a real strong offensive player for us.”
Ella Smith will be the other right side player, alongside Pullen.
“We’ll be experimenting with a 6-2 offense this year,” noted Kindschuh.
The Warriors will also be counting heavily on Alyssa Bruce, who earned all-GAC honors last season.
“I think we’ve got a program going in the right direction,” said Kindschuh. “Our middle school has a couple good coaches down there who are churning out good players for us. When they come in as freshmen they already know the game and we don’t have to spend time reteaching.”
The Warriors’ season will likely look different than usual, with tournaments modified to prevent mass gatherings.
Kindschuh says he is hopeful the team will get to experience at least part of the season.
“It would really hurt if we didn’t have a season, but they’re enjoying being together and competing in practice,” said Kindschuh. “We’re just going to go one day at a time and see how things unfold.”
