Seven people, including two juveniles, were injured following a two-vehicle crash Wednesday, Jan. 14, that caused one of the vehicles to careen into the front of Martin Funeral Home injuring four people inside.
According to a Missouri State Highway Patrol preliminary crash report, a 2015 Ford Taurus, driven by a 76-year-old Warrenton man, accelerated through the intersection of Highway 47 and Main Street in Warrenton and struck a 2006 Chevrolet Impala driven by a 26-year-old female from Warrenton as it made a turn from southbound Highway 47 onto Main Street. The front of the Taurus struck the rear of the Impala at a high rate of speed and the impact pushed the Impala across Main Street into the front corner of Martin Funeral Home.
According to Lt. Jason Hanner with the Warrenton Police Department, the driver of the Taurus suffered a medical emergency leading to the crash. Hanner said that seven officers from the department were on scene, which he described as “chaotic." Officers assisted in getting people out from the Impala and people inside the building, who were trapped under the debris.
Warren County Fire Protection District Fire Marshal Scott Determann said that his department was dispatched by a call around 5:19 p.m. and due to the circumstances also requested assistance from the Wright City Fire Protection District. He said one female inside Martin Funeral Home was pinned between the Impala and a wall of the building. Determann also said a 12-year-old male juvenile inside the funeral home was pinned under the Impala.
Determann said upon fire district personnel arriving on scene one of the first priorities was to get the building stabilized where the vehicle entered the building and to get victims extricated from the scene. He said there was another female inside the building who was also covered by debris.
In total seven patients were transported from the scene. A one-year-old male from Warrenton, who was an occupant of the Impala, was transported by Warren County Ambulance District to SSM Health St. Joseph Hospital in Lake St. Louis with moderate injuries. The 12-year-old male from Warrenton was transported by Warren County Ambulance District to SSM Health St. Joseph Hospital with minor injuries. A 21-year old female from Wentzville, who was also inside the funeral home was transported by private vehicle to Progress West Hospital with minor injuries. The 26-year-old driver of the Impala was transported by Warren County Ambulance District to SSM Health St. Joseph with minor injuries. A 52-year old female from Warrenton, who was inside the funeral home at the time of the crash, was transported by Warren County Ambulance District to Mercy Hospital St. Louis with minor injuries. A 60-year old female from Warrenton, who was inside the funeral home at the time of the crash, was transported by Warren County Ambulance District to SSM Health St. Joseph with serious injuries and the driver of the Taurus was transported by St. Charles County Ambulance District to SSM Health St. Joseph Hospital with minor injuries.
The Missouri State Highway Patrol no longer releases the names of the occupants involved in injury crashes.
