Senior core sets standard for Warrenton under four-year coach

The seniors on the 2025-26 Warrenton girls basketball team hold both a special place with each other, but within the program itself.

That’s because Zoe Duncan, Savannah Miller, Natalie Scheibe, and Makayla Witthaus have not only played together since grade school basketball at Holy Rosary, but the quartet formed a large portion of Coach Hannah Logan’s first team and have been with her ever since.

“I think this group has been so special,” said Duncan, choking back tears after the Warriors’ 50-30 loss to For Zumwalt South on March 4 in a Class 5 District 4 semifinal. “All of us have played together since Holy Rosary in sixth grade. This (ending) is really hard on all of us. I’m going to miss the friendships we’ve built. I know we can all count on each other.”

That bond saw the team through the tough times of this season’s 11-17 finish.

Behind junior guard Sophia Benke’s 11.0 points per game, the senior contingent led the way as Duncan (8.5 points per game), Witthaus (8.3 PPG) and Miller (7.5 PPG) helped fuel an average of 42.3 points per game.

“These girls have been my family, they’ve always been there for me,” Witthaus said. “Watching each other grow and develop as people has just been inspirational to me.”

Under Logan’s tutelage, the core group helped Warrenton achieve a cumulative 60-49 record over the past four seasons.

Included in that finish are back-to-back seasons with opening-round wins in district play. This year, the team defeated Holt 46-36 on March 2, winning its district opener. Amongst other highlights for the team this season were toppling St. Charles West on February 10 in what marked a 22-point turnaround from the teams’ first meeting.

Warrenton also defeated Winfield twice, bringing its win streak since 2000 to 34 straight games.

“Through all the highs and the lows, the happiness and the frustration, I learned from them,” Logan said. “This is a very special group to me, as they came in when I did. I will always remember them.”

Miller said she’s excited to have helped set a program standard under Logan.

If the younger girls in the program have been given a blueprint of what Warrenton basketball is all about and what expectations are, then the current seniors have done their jobs, she said.

She can take pride in that, even if it means things will be bittersweet in the immediate future.

“It’s going to be tough,” Miller said. “We’ve played together for our entire lives. It’s going to be hard to get used to not being around them. I feel like we’ve set a good (example) being role models for coach as starters. I think there will be really big shoes to fill as the next classes come along.”
