Scoreless third quarter dooms Wright City in loss to Van-Far

The Wright City girls basketball team ran out of gas in its 41-33 home loss to Van-Far Tuesday night.

The Wildcats led 14-12 after one quarter, but slowly started regressing as the game went on.

Van-Far took a 27-23 lead at halftime and opened up the game in the third quarter.

Van-Far hit six 3-pointers in the first half and forced the Wildcats out of their zone and into a man-to-man defense in the third quarter.

The Indians knocked down another 3-pointer on their first possession of the second half.

“We wanted to switch it up because they were getting the 3s anyway,” Wright City Head Coach Fred Ross said. “But the girls didn’t talk on defense and it showed.”

Erin Tomschin led the Wildcats with 10 points.

Savannah Bridges added nine and Abbey Jaspering finished with six.

The Wright City offense fell apart in the third quarter, going scoreless the entire frame while Van-Far extended its lead to 30-23.

“We got some good looks but we just didn’t hit shots,” Ross said. “We didn’t want to work hard in that third quarter, and we paid for it.”

The Wildcats (2-19) were held scoreless until 3:05 mark of the fourth quarter.

Ross said he hopes to see improvements in the final regular season game, Friday at home against Wellsville-Middletown.

Wright City earned the No. 8 seed in the Class 3, District 6 tournament and face No. 1 Duchesne (20-4) Monday at 3:30 p.m. at O’Fallon Christian.

The Pioneers, which return all five starters from last year’s team, were ranked seventh in the latest Missouri Basketball Coaches Association Class 3 rankings.

“They’re going to have to have an off game and we’ll have to have a great game to compete,” Ross said. “And there were times this season where we played up to our competition for part of the game, so we’re capable of playing well.”

If Wright City pulls off the upset, it would play O’Fallon Christian or North Tech Wednesday in the semifinals.

“They’re probably better basketball players at every position, but we have to work hard and do the little things to keep it close,” Ross said. “We’re going to try and slow things down, hopefully.”
