Schulte’s sweep highlights big meet for Warren County schools at Wright City Invitational

Like the Wright City track teams as a whole, sophomore Kaveon Schulte represented himself well on Thursday.

Schulte swept the hurdles races as he won the 110-meter race (16.33 seconds) and 300 (14.76).

"It felt good to place in both events on our home track,” Schulte said. “While I still have room to improve, I was pretty proud of putting my all into it."

Wright City Coach Fred Ross said the result was proof of the hard work the hurdler has been putting in so far this season.

“Coach Sue Wright has helped him on his steps,” Ross said. “That’s helped him increase his speed.”

Just like Schulte, the Wildcats’ teams had a memorable meet.

The Wildcats finished second on the girls’ side with 102 points while the boys (103) finished third.

A trio of first-place finishes paced the girls’ team.

The 4x100 team of junior Ada Ferrell, senior Jolee Lockart, sophomore Kiera Carter and junior Anna Klekamp had a top time of 54.51 seconds.

Senior Sadie Sehnert (108 feet-8 inches) won the javelin. Sophomore Madison Goodman (4-9.75) won the high jump.

“The girls did a great job as a team even though a few girls ran in different events at the jv meet last night,” Wildcats’ Coach Fred Ross said. “We had girls score in all of our entered events, except one.”

The other boys’ winner for Wright City was senior Kaden Cross in the 100 (11.44).

The Warrenton boys finished second, as a team, at the event with 134.5 points, while the girls finished fifth with 60 points.

Warriors winners in the boys’ events included: senior Johnathan Sweitzer in the 400 (53.83), and freshman Mason Sanders (6-2) in the high jump.

The boys also had two relay teams earning the top spot as the 4x200 team of senior Jonathan Sweitzer, freshman Ty Thompson, freshman Antevion Pierce and sophomore Antwian Pierce won in 1:33.77. Freshman Dominic Laney, junior Jordan Lopez, Antevion Pierce and Antwian Pierce (3:36.76) won the 4x400.

“They are both very gifted runners and have some of the best form on our team,” Coach Mark Thomas said of the Pierces' work with the teams. “They are so smooth.”

On the girls’ side, two athletes came away with wins as sophomore Claire Goldsmith (28.55) won the 200 while senior Makayla Witthaus captured titles in the shot put (36-9) and the discus (93-11).

The final of the three local teams – Liberty Christian – also ran at the meet.

The girls finished 11th with 18 points, while the boys finished eighth with 37 points.

Freshman Bristol Barron finished fifth in the triple jump (30-4.25) in what turned out to be a record-breaking result.

“She set a new school record in the event,” Liberty Coach Doug Smith said. “Of course, she broke her own record.”
