Warrenton and Wright City high schools are expected to say goodbye to some of the biggest classes to ever roam each of its hallways. Both graduation ceremonies will be held this Sunday, May 17, at 2 p.m. Warrenton expects to hand out 220 diplomas, while Wright City's senior class is around 105 students. Warrenton recently announced it has five valedictorians and two salutatorians. The valedictorians who will each speak at commencement are Sam Pelts, Ben Tappmeyer, A.J. Wallace, Kayla Meine and Malory Toebben. The salutatorians are Gabrielle Hane and Kristin Schneider. The keynote speaker is John Nordwald, a former school board member who did not seek re-election in April. Wright City, meanwhile, won't be releasing the names of its top two students until late this week. Dr. Allan Hogenmiller, high school principal, said grades will be compiled Thursday following final exams. The top three students in the running have each been asked to prepare a speech, but the top two won't be known until Sunday. One student scheduled to speak is Veronica Edwards, the senior class president. Warrenton High School Principal Jeremy Way said this year's senior class holds a special place with him, since this is the first class to enter as freshmen when he arrived at the school district. "I am very proud of this group," Way said. "They have helped and led one another." Way noted he has been impressed with the way the class came together following a two-week span where two students were killed in separate vehicle crashes. Senior Casey Monshower was a passenger in a vehicle crash March 21. Eleven days after Monshower died, junior Devin Sherry was killed. "Seeing them grow and mature, I have never been prouder," Way said about the seniors. "Having their leadership really helped the younger kids." Wright City High School Principal Dr. Allan Hogenmiller also said this year's seniors matured as the year went on. He recalled a monthly spirit game competition where the different grade levels compete for braggin' rights. Hogenmiller said the seniors knew they wouldn't win top honors, so they started rallying behind the underclassmen. "They were disappointed, but they were cheering for the other classes," Hogenmiller said. "What I like most is their class spirit. They have continued to pull themselves together." Way said the seniors are encouraged to arrive at 12:45 p.m. Sunday to begin taking pictures. Parents can arrive between 1-1:50 a.m., he added. Once the gym is full, an overflow room will be set up in the commons area where attendees can watch the ceremony on a television. Way said each student has received 10 tickets for family and friends. At Wright City, seniors are asked to arrive at 1 p.m. Seating will be on a first-come, first-serve basis. Hogenmiller noted handicapped accessibility seating will be available.
