School Year Extended in R-II District

The Wright City R-II School Board voted last week to amend the district’s spring semester calendar. The last day of class will now be May 25. Originally the last day was May 18. “We’ve missed 11 days,” Superintendent Dr. Chris Gaines told the board during its Feb. 24 meeting. “If we have to miss more because of the weather, we’ll continue to add to the end.” As part of its makeup plan, the district held classes on Presidents Day, Monday, Feb. 21, and will be in session Monday, April 25, following Easter. “We believe that with the current way state forgiveness rules are written, May 26 would be our last day in a worst-case scenario in which we miss more days,” said Gaines. He also noted there is a legislative bill that has been filed that could change that to include more forgiveness time. Gaines said he does not think the bill is likely to pass. The vote in favor of the motion to accept the amended calendar was unanimous at 5-0. Members Gina Allen and Alice Klem were absent from the meeting. Gaines said next school year, the district will have three built-in makeup days  in the 177-day calendar, and will delineate how other snow days will be dealt with. It also will specify how the district will back out of those makeup days if they are not needed. Schools are required to be in session for 174 days. “In the past, we’ve used spring break for necessary makeup days,” said Gaines. “But for this year and the year ahead, we’re protecting this week so that people who make travel and other plans after the calendar is adopted in March can be sure they aren’t going to have to cancel their plans at the last minute. “By protecting spring break, that means we add to the end of the year for makeup days,” Gaines added, who noted that more and more districts are protecting spring break, but also said there are several districts that do not have a traditional weeklong break at all.
