Devin Sherry, 17, of Warrenton, was killed in a one-vehicle accident Wednesday, April 1, on Schuetzenground Road, about five miles south of Highway M. The wreck occurred at 5:25 p.m. Sherry, a junior, was pronounced dead at the scene by Warren County Coroner Roger Mauzy. According to the Missouri State Highway Patrol, Sherry was driving a 2003 Chevrolet Silverado southbound when he lost control on a curve and traveled off the right side of the road. The vehicle struck a dirt embankment and overturned. Sherry was partially ejected out the passenger side window when the vehicle came to a rest, the report said. He was not wearing a seat belt, according to police. Sherry was a three-sport athlete who was a state qualifier in wrestling and cross country. He also played the flute on the high school band. He advanced to the state wrestling meet as a sophomore and junior. He competed at the state cross country meet last fall and placed 88th overall. He was currently on the track team. Craig Frazier, activities director and former head wrestling coach, said Sherry put in extra work to defy the expectations from his 130-pound frame. When Sherry wrestled his way to state in 2008, he began the district tournament unseeded, but battled his way into a top four finish. "He would wrestle his best and step up at the right time," Frazier said. "More than talent was his mental toughness." Mark Storzer and John Meyer, both juniors, were a handful of students who visited the crash site last Thursday afternoon. Storzer began a memorial by placing a 2000 Khoury League baseball picture and a ball cap at the site. He said he would remember Sherry's laugh and smile. "Everybody remembers the funny times in school," Storzer said. "He was an amazing kid." Meyer was on the wrestling team with Sherry and part of a group of five grapplers who advanced to state in February. "He was a good guy," Meyer said. "He was always laughing and smiling. If you were in a bad mood, he tried to cheer you up." High School Principal Jeremy Way said counselors from throughout the district and the Crider Center were at the school last Thursday to help students grieve. He described the school day being "eerily quiet" throughout the hallways. On his past interactions with Sherry, Way added, "I think he got a lot out of high school. He made the most of all of his opportunities." Sherry's death came 11 days after senior Casey Monshower was killed in a wreck on Sunnyside Road outside of Warrenton. Monshower was a passenger in a vehicle driven by Justin Guinn, 17, that left the road and struck a tree. "Having two back-to-back has been tough," Frazier said. Sherry is survived by his parents, Michael and Geicha Sherry, and two siblings, Ryan and Maria. Visitation services were held Saturday at Martin Funeral Home in Warrenton. Burial was private at Lippstadt Cemetery.
