By Janine Davis Record Staff Writer Some Warren County R-III students may soon have a safer and more pleasant walk to and from school as Warrenton city and district officials continue discussions regarding adding sidewalks along a stretch of Pinckney Street. The new sidewalks are slated to run south from the Warrenton High School entrance on Pinckney to Warrior Avenue, allowing students in nearby subdivisions, such as Warrior Ridge, to funnel onto walkways to and from the high school and Warrior Ridge Elementary. The sidewalks would be on the west side of the street. There currently are sidewalks north of the high school entrance on Pinckney to East Main Street in Truesdale, but none south of the high school entrance. R-III Superintendent Jim Chandler told the school board of the plans during the April monthly meeting. “The city of Warrenton is working on a number of sidewalk projects, and one of them is in front of the high school to Warrior Avenue,” said Chandler. Lewis-Bade, Inc. is handling surveying, design specs and bid document preparation. School officials said that more information is expected May 8, when city officials and engineering representatives plan to brief district leaders and discuss possible cost sharing of the project which is estimated at nearly $100,000. In other school board action, Yaz’s Lawn Service was awarded the school’s contract for mowing services at $1,150 per year for two years, and $1,250 for the third year. Six bids were received. A lower bid was submitted from Forget Lawn Service in Washington, but school officials recommended the bid from Yaz’s Lawn Service, because the company is local, was within 10 percent of the lowest bid amount, and employs Warrenton High School students. T.S. Banze Construction was awarded a competitive contract for building a concrete pad for a walk-in freezer at the middle school. Banze’s bid was $8,290. The next lowest bid was $8,628 from Barry Schaefer Construction. The highest bid of $11,052 was from Karrenbrock Construction.
