Bill Schaffer, band director at Wright City Middle School and Wright City R-II High School, recently was named the district’s “Teacher of the Year.” Schaffer was nominated by, and represented, the staff at Wright City Middle School. “It was a surprise, but I certainly appreciated (the recognition),” Schaffer told The Record. “It’s nice to have people think that you’re doing your job well, but it was a big surprise.” Other nominees for the award were: Stephanie Perry, Wright City East Elementary School; Mindy Heuser, Wright City West Elementary School; and Fred Ross, Wright City R-II High School. The four nominees submitted information to the Wright City R-II Central Office staff which reviewed and voted upon the candidates. “I think the size and success of our band program is a testament to Mr. Schaffer’s ability to motivate students,” said Dr. Chris Gaines, Wright City R-II superintendent. Schaffer will now compete with other districts’ overall winners in a statewide competition.
