To The Editor:St. Charles Community College was thrilled to add Warren County to its extended service area 18 months ago. Soon after, we got the call from Warren County leadership to bring technical training into their county. The SCC Board of Trustees answered that call when they placed Prop J on the November 2019 ballot in Warren County R-III and Wright City R-II school districts. This tax proposal, for 16.66 cents per $100 of assessed valuation, would allow the college to provide education at in-district rates with a focus on technical training requested by local employers and emerging industries. For the owner of a $160,000 home (the average Warren County home value), the tax equates to 98 cents per week or $4.25 a month. The SCC Board adopted a resolution affirming that all property taxes raised from Warren County will stay in Warren County, should the taxpayers vote in favor of Prop J on Nov. 5.Technical programs will include agriculture technology, welding, advanced manufacturing, industrial maintenance/controls, and transportation/logistics. In addition to receiving in-district tuition, high school students will gain access to dual enrollment and dual-credit classes which could lead to technical certifications coming out of high school. And adults 25 (and older) may be eligible for the state’s new Fast-Track Grant, providing funds to cover tuition/fees/books and more when they enroll in a high-demand tech field.SCC stands ready to provide technical training in Warren County when the voters tell us on Nov. 5 if they are ready as well.Dr. Barbara KavalierPresident, St. Charles Community College
