The Wright City government office is warning residents against an email scam using the name of city officials to ask for gift cards.City Administrator Jim Schuchmann said the city office received falsified emails Friday morning using names and titles of officials that likely were taken from the city’s website. The messages indicated that the official was in talks with an unspecified charity organization, and was asking to the recipient to go buy gift cards as a donation. The email offered later reimbursement for the gift cards.“This immediately was recognized as being a scam attempt upon reading,” Schuchmann said. “The city will never ask for payment in the form of gift cards. If someone asks you to send money via gift cards you should always question the legitimacy of the request.”Schuchmann said anyone who receives an email that appears to be a scam should not respond and should contact local authorities.

Schuchmann said the city office’s computer system has cyber-security measures in place and that no city data or money was put at risk.City of Wright City logo
