The opportunity to become one of the first-ever football players on an emerging program was too enticing to pass up for one Warrenton senior.Missouri Baptist University will unveil its gridiron team this fall, and Eddie Sanchez recently signed his letter of intent to play for the Spartans.“Seeing all of the new equipment during my visit and realizing I could be a part of a new program was really exciting,” said Sanchez. “I liked all the coaches. Talking on the phone with them really helped me out a lot.”Sanchez is the second player Coach Steve McDowell has sent on to the collegiate level from this class, with Logan Shay having committed to Culver-Stockton.Sanchez passed up a chance to play for Culver, choosing to stay closer to home.“It’s a good opportunity for Eddie,” said McDowell. “He’s got the ability to go on and excel at the next level.”Sanchez says his versatility is perhaps his best attribute, as he has played across the line during two seasons as a starter for the Warriors.“I’ve always felt like I was pretty good, but this year knowing I could play every position helped boost my confidence a lot,” said Sanchez. “I feel like I have pretty fast feet and strong footwork.”McDowell has witnessed Sanchez’s progression, having asked him to play center, guard and tackle throughout his career.“He’s a strong kid and has always been a very consistent football player,” said McDowell. “His big thing is getting in the weight room and getting prepared for that next level.”Sanchez was a pivotal part of the Warriors’ rushing attack, opening up holes and moving the line.“He’s a good run blocker,” said McDowell. “Once he gets his feet moving he’s able to move people out of the way.”Sanchez did record 12 tackles on the defensive side of the ball.“It’s really exciting,” said Sanchez. “It’s awesome to know that football won’t be done after high school, because I love the sport.”Adding to his eagerness is the notion that he won’t have to wait to play, and all recruits are vying for starting roles with no upperclassmen on board.“Knowing that everyone is coming in new is great, because there’s no secure position,” said Sanchez. “There’s a chance to secure a spot for the first year.”Sanchez plans to pursue a degree in physical education.Warrenton senior Eddie Sanchez recently signed a letter of intent to play football for Missouri Baptist University.
