Salon collects items for foster care

A local hair salon is celebrating the completion of its first collection drive for area foster children.Tina Lashley of Our Hair Salon in Wright City said the business organized a fundraiser and infant goods collection for the Warren Audrain Montgomery County Foster and Adoption Support group (WAM).During November, community members contributed donations at drop-off locations throughout the three counties. The main goal of the collection was to provide new socks, underwear and diapers for foster children, Lashley said. Other clothing drives provide a lot of used clothes, she said, but nobody wants used underwear. She said the collection also brought in monetary donations, stuffed animals and other clothing items.More than 50 items were collected in total. Lashley said the collection drive went well, considering it was the salon’s first.“I think foster kids are the ones that are forgotten,” Lashley said. “They really don’t get a lot of money from the state, and they need that money right away. They don’t have a month and a half to wait for diapers.”WAM provides support, training and resources for foster children and their families. For more information, contact WAM President Dawn Mowery by emailing Dawn@wamfosteradopt.com.
