Safety tips for families for a safe Halloween

Kids love to dress up as their favorite princess or action hero every Halloween, but as with every activity, parents should strive to make the event as safe as possible. The National Safety Council (NSC) reports that pedestrians being struck by a vehicle is the most common injury suffered on Halloween. Motorists should assume that excited little ghosts and ghouls could step (or run) into their paths.Ralph Hellebusch, Warren County Ambulance District administrator, stressed that children should always wear reflective clothing and only visit homes that are known to the family.“Parents really need to watch out how much candy the kids consume,” he added. “With all the food allergies, they also need to look for nuts or red dye.”Hellebusch also recommended following these tips from the NSC:• Every child should be accompanied by a parent or responsible adult.• Only go to homes with a porch light on.• Never enter a home or car for a treat.• Put electronic devices down, keep heads up and walk, don’t run.• Motorists should be extremely cautious.• Add reflective tape to costumes or wear light-colored clothing.• Eat treats at home.Other tips include wearing comfortable shoes, carrying a flashlight, making sure costumes do not drag on the ground and eliminating masks. Non-toxic makeup is a great alternative.Parents should inspect their children’s candy and throw away any candy not in its original wrapper or looks as if it has been opened.“Parents need to use common sense overall and take proper precautions,” Hellebusch said. Halloween is Monday, Oct. 31.Halloween
