Workers at the SAF Holland plant south of Main Street in Warrenton were evacuated due to a smoke alarm Thursday morning.
The alarm was caused by a portable unit that filters welding exhaust, Fire Chief Mike Owenby said. The filter in the unit probably caught a stray spark, he said.
“The filter doesn’t catch fire, it just pours out smoke and smolders,” Owenby said.
Workers in the plant weren’t in any danger, and already had the smoking unit outside when firefighters arrived, Owenby said.
Firefighters remained on standby outside the plant until the filter unit had burned itself out and smoke cleared from inside the building. Workers were cleared to return inside shortly after.
