A Rural King store in Warrenton is not yet a sure thing.During a September groundbreaking ceremony at the Shoppes at Warrenton mall, developer Art King said he had a commitment from Rural King to build a new 85,000-square-foot farm and home store at the shopping center. The mall is the subject of a $6 million redevelopment agreement between King’s company, RAK Development, and the city of Warrenton.Rural King has been touted as the anchor store for the redevelopment of the former outlet mall. Nearby, the city is financing, with voter approval, construction of a new Interstate 70 interchange with the intention of attracting new business to the area.As an anchor store, Rural King’s presence would help draw in other merchants to fill empty tenant spaces at the mall. But the store’s presence in Warrenton isn’t a done deal.Last week a representative of the Rural King corporate office in Mattoon, Ill., told The Record that the company has not made a firm commitment to opening in Warrenton.Rural King Marketing Manager Sue Francis followed up with an email stating, “Rural King is currently looking into the Warrenton, MO market, and further details are still being finalized.”The Record reached out to Art King, the developer, Feb. 5. King said he would not comment on the matter, saying he has had previous experiences of being misquoted by the media. He did not specify what media outlets he was referring to.King said if he had information, he would send a press release to a larger news outlet. He asked The Record not to call him back.Officials with the city of Warrenton were contacted by The Record, but had not replied to requests for comment as of press time.Rural King was mentioned in 2016 as a likely tenant of the mall if Warrenton voters approved two sales taxes to raise $15 million for the new I-70 interchange. The site of the interchange is just west of the mall. Convenient access to the mall from I-70 was a major selling point for passing the sales tax measures.RAK Development is financing the redevelopment of the mall. The developer is eligible to receive up to $6 million in reimbursement from the city of Warrenton, paid out of new sales tax revenue generated from the revived shopping center. That money will only be released to the developer after several requirements are completed. One of those requirements is to bring a major anchor store to the mall, which could be Rural King or another store of comparable size.Rural King sign
