Sen. Elizabeth Warren’s actions in the confirmation process of President Donald Trump’s nominees for cabinet positions have manufactured widespread opinions that she is off and running for the Democratic nomination for president in 2020.She has caused senators on both sides of the aisle to be uncomfortable with her actions in the U.S. Senate, which has a rule that a senator can be barred from speaking if it is a personal attack that impugns the character of a fellow senator.Sen. Warren (D-Mass.) was reading a letter from Coretta Scott King, the late widow of Martin Luther King Jr., that described Sen. Jeff Sessions as being unfit for the office of attorney general because of his actions when he served as a federal prosecutor in Alabama. Sen. Sessions is a conservative Republican.Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) led the vote along party lines to invoke the rule and to halt Warren from speaking. Sessions was confirmed, again mostly along party lines.Warren got what she wanted — publicity and sympathy! The speaking rule surely was known by her when she began her personal attack on Sen. Sessions. It is true the rule rarely has been imposed on a senator. As to her chances to be the Democratic nominee for president in 2020, so much can happen between now and then that there is no way to predict what will happen. She has made some enemies in her own party, and who knows who else will be on the ballot.Sen. Sessions has been a target of allegations of racial bias for some years. So far, President Trump has a good batting average in gaining acceptance of his nominations for cabinet positions. When will we hear from Sen. Warren again?
