The Wright City girls track team is ready to take advantage of a different field in Saturday’s Class 3, Sectional 3 meet in Mexico.“The competition in our district was really sprint-oriented,” Wright City Head Coach Sue Wright said. “But the competition in our sectional is really distance-oriented.”That should test Wildcat distance runners Jynna Fritz and Erin Tomschin, who each qualified in the 800- and 1,600-meter at last week’s district meet.Tomschin also qualified in the 3,200 with a fourth-place finish.“I think Erin is afraid she isn’t going to qualify, so she wants to run them all,” Wright said with a laugh. But going forward, don’t expect to see Tomschin in all three individual races.“When we go there Saturday, I think we’re going to focus on two races for her after looking at results and analyzing times,” Wright said.Tomschin’s best race – according to sectional qualifying times — is the 3,200, where she ranks seventh with a season-best time of 12 minutes, 53.24 seconds. Fritz and Tomschin also qualified in the 3,200 relay, along with freshmen Maryanna Hale and Lilly Sargent. The group finished second in 10 minutes, 58.02 seconds.“I don’t think we’ll get out in the 4X8, because with two young kids running it will be tough,” Wright said. The 800 relay team of Danielle Dyer, Kia Campbell, Janee Hill and Emajahnai Hunter took advantage of two disqualifications to finish fourth in their race.“I tell these kids all the time that you never know,” Wright said. “You’ve got to run it because you just never know. I’ve been to a sectional where the best team dropped a baton.”Wright City Wildcats
