The game started well for the Wright City baseball team and sophomore shortstop Tyler Martin put a nice exclamation on it – it was just the middle part that was forgettable.
An eight-run fourth inning proved to be the difference on Wednesday as host Wright City fell to Duchesne by the 13-5 score.
The offense mustered by Wright City came on two swings as a first-inning double by sophomore Kayden McCurdy scored Martin before Martin’s sixth-inning grand slam provided the closing fireworks.
Senior Logan Rose suffered the loss on the mound for the Wildcats as the program honored the team’s three seniors – Rose, Christian Mohr and Christian Schutte – in a pregame ceremony.
Wright City (13-11) will close the season with the Mexico Tournament, which runs today through Saturday, before playing at Elsberry at 5 p.m. Monday.
WILDCATS EARN COMEBACK WIN IN RESUMED GAME – The Wright City girls soccer team got a lot done in a little bit of time on Wednesday.
Playing just over 23 minutes of the resumption of a lightning-halted game from April 1, the Wildcats conceded a goal before rallying for the 2-1 win over St. Clair.
Down 1-0, junior Ada Ferrell blasted home a shot with just more than six minutes left. The goal was her 23rd of the season.
With the clock winding down, freshman Haley Elsenrath put away the game-winner with 1 minute, 12 seconds left in regulation. It was her 20th goal of the season.
Junior Marli Burkahrdt, who was earlier in the day named to the St. Louis Best XI for her play last week, earned the win.
Wright City (12-5) will play at Battle tomorrow before ending the regular season next week in the Hazelwood Central Tournament. The Wildcats open play at 5:45 p.m. on Monday against Hancock.
WRIGHT CITY TRACK PAIR EARNS HONORS – Kaveon Schulte and Kaden Cross earned a pair of big honors on Wednesday.
The pair were named the Eastern Missouri Conference Hurdler and Sprinter of the Year, respectively, by conference coaches.
Schulte won the 110-meter hurdles (15.90) and finished second in the 300 (4.31).
Cross won both the 100 (11.37) and 200 (23.21) races at the conference meet.
SEASON ENDS FOR WRIGHT CITY GOLF – At the Class 3 District 2 golf tournament at Tanglewood Golf Course in Fulton, the Wright City golf team completed its 2026 season.
The team scored 429 and Jonathan Windmann (90) was the team’s low 18-hole total.
