A man accused of threatening a Warrenton woman with a handgun and stealing her purse, then later assaulting a deputy and attempting to escape custody, has pleaded guilty to two felony charges.Roman R. Fitzgibbons, 26, O’Fallon, formerly of Warrenton, entered the plea on Thursday, April 19, to charges of first-degree robbery and armed criminal action. He was sentenced to 10 years in prison on the robbery charge, with a five-year sentence for armed criminal action to be served concurrently. He will receive credit for time already served in jail. The sentencing was the result of a plea agreement with the Warren County Prosecuting Attorney’s Office.Fitzgibbons was arrested Sept. 17, 2017, after robbing a woman on Arlington Way in Warrenton and then fleeing. The victim told police that when she walked out of her residence, Fitzgibbons was in her vehicle, then got out of the vehicle and robbed her at gunpoint. He was located and arrested about 30 minutes later.Fitzgibbons faces additional felony charges in St. Charles County for assaulting a deputy during an alleged escape attempt at St. Joseph Hospital in Lake St. Louis. He was taken to the hospital for treatment the day after being arrested. He was in the custody of a Warren County sheriff’s deputy, accompanied by a Lake St. Louis police officer. With his hands restrained in front of his body, Fitzgibbons asked to use the restroom. While in the restroom, he reportedly lunged at the deputy guarding him, trying to take the officer’s handgun.Officers eventually gained control of Fitzgibbons and restrained him.He is charged with second-degree assault against a special victim and attempted escape from custody while under arrest for a felony. The charges could potentially add another decade or more to Fitzgibbons’ time in prison if he is convicted.Criminal proceedings against Fitzgibbons in St. Charles County have been on hold while he is in custody in Warren County.Roman Fitzgibbons
