Veterans Memorial Parkway west of Highway MM in Warrenton has been closed as crews start construction of a new Interstate 70 interchange.
The road was closed Monday, Sept. 25, so workers could begin building up ground for a new overpass and ramps.
The entire section of Veterans Memorial Parkway around the interchange will eventually be replaced.
The road is expected to reopen at the end of June 2018, according to the Missouri Department of Transportation.
“We will keep area residents and drivers updated on how work is progressing through our website, social media and meetings with the city and other organizations in the area,” said MoDOT engineer Erik Maninga.
The most direct detour around the closure will be to use Highway U and Sunnyside Road.
The Missouri Highways and Transportation Commission recently awarded a $8,551,941.42 contract for the interchange construction to Emery Sapp & Sons, according to MoDOT. The cost of the project is being fully funded by a sales tax approved by Warrenton voters in 2016.
Designs for the interchange include three roundabouts — two at either end of the overpass where it will connect to the outer roads and one at the intersection of Veterans Memorial Parkway and Highway MM.
Maninga said it will take about 18 months to complete the project, and once it is done, the interchange will be owned and maintained by MoDOT.
“In exchange for adding to Missouri’s transportation system, the city (of Warrenton) has agreed to assume responsibility of ownership and maintenance of Route MM to Main Street and the south outer road from Denny’s to the new interchange,” he added.
More information about the project is available on the city of Warrenton’s website and will soon be added to the MoDOT Northeast District website.
