Resolving flooding a priority for R-II

Record Staff WriterIn an effort to curb an ongoing groundskeeping problem, the Wright City R-II School District is currently seeking bids for the construction of a detention basin at the high school.Recent heavy rains again brought to the forefront an issue that is causing flooding in part of the track and field areas and subsequently threatening a neighboring residential property.Excess water coming from the football field and road above leading to the baseball and softball diamond accumulates around the shot put area and fence that separates the school grounds from the Northridge Apartment Complex.“We’re wanting to reduce the amount of water that goes across our property,” said R-II Superintendent David Buck. The problem has been especially prevalent the past two springs, he said.Construction plans for a project that would eliminate the concern were approved during the district’s monthly board meeting Nov. 19.“Water is a common enemy, and it can cause some real issues,” said Buck. “There are no specific laws related to this type of matter, but we want to be good neighbors and mitigate to help eliminate the situation.”He says the water does not impact the parking lot or any other functional area of the property except for the shot put pit, which the district is in the process of relocating. Construction of a trapezoidal rip-rap swale will take place once the shot put pit is removed. Fencing also may be added or removed as deemed necessary.“We should be able to make approval on the bids during our January meeting after we have talked with the engineers,” said Buck, who expects construction to begin around February, with the project completed prior to the start of track and field season, weather permitting.
