Representative Candidate Following Son's Path

Jan Sutherland has set her sights on following her son's footsteps. On Tuesday, she was one of three Republican candidates to file for the 99th District House of Representatives seat. Bart Korman and Rick Smith also filed on the first day candidates could file for state offices. The three candidates are vying to succeed Mike Sutherland, who has held the seat for the past eight years and is term limited. As of press time, no Democrat had filed. The filing deadline is Tuesday, March 30. The primary is scheduled to be held Aug. 3, with the general election following on Nov. 2. Sutherland is running for two elected positions. One of three candidates vying for two seats on the Warren County R-III School Board, Sutherland, the lone incumbent, will participate in that election in April. She is currently wrapping up her first term. Pointing out that current and former members of the House served on local school boards and in the Legislature, Sutherland doesn't anticipate any trouble holding both offices should she be elected. "I'm not the lone person doing this," she remarked. This is Korman's second attempt at seeking the Republican nomination for the 99th District. He lost in the primary in 2002 to Mike Sutherland. Twenty-six at the time, the High Hill resident acknowledged he learned from the experience. "I want to serve the people in the communities I live and work in," Korman said. "I have always felt participating in your government is an important thing." Smith, of Jonesburg, previously ran unsuccessfully for Warren County presiding commissioner several years ago. Prior to that, he served as chairman of the county planning and zoning board for 9 1/2 years. He said he became interested in the position after several business leaders, farmers and other individuals asked him to consider running. "After doing some research, I thought I would give it a shot," Smith said. "I want to get trust and integrity back into the public's eyes. They thought they were getting change and it doesn't seem like that is happening. A lot of stuff that should be getting done is not getting done." Sutherland, of Warrenton, is a member of the Warren County Historical Society Board of Directors and Warren County Resource Board. She previously served on the board of Agape Ministry of Warren County and was a founder of the Warren County Republican Women. She was previously employed in the R-III school district and School of Veterinary Medicine at the University of Missouri. Her husband, Keith, is currently the 12th Judicial Circuit presiding judge. "I have no preconceived agenda if I am elected as representative, but it is clear that we must do everything we can within budget limitations to promote education, agriculture and small business," Sutherland said. "Those are the keys to future prosperity, not only of Warren and Montgomery counties, but the entire state as well." Korman, of High Hill, is an engineer and land surveyor for Warrenton-based Lewis-Bade Inc. He also is currently the Montgomery County surveyor, a position he was appointed to in 2005 and then elected to in 2008. Korman is active in the Warren County Rotary Club, Montgomery County Fair Agri-land Committee and 16th Senatorial District Republican Committee. Korman's focus, he said, will be on helping local businesses and working to tighten the state budget. "We need to create better infrastructures to help businesses out," he said. Smith owns insurance companies in Jonesburg and Lake Saint Louis with his wife. He said one of his priorities is making Warren and Montgomery counties more viable and attractive to visitors and passers-by. The 99th District covers all of Warren County and part of Montgomery County.
