Report: Inmate attacked jail officer

An inmate in the Warren County Jail injured a detention officer in an assault last month, according the county sheriff’s department.Christopher M. Stephens, 27, who is in jail on charges of sexual abuse and threatening a witness, is now accused of third-degree assault against a special victim. The alleged assault was detailed in a report to the Warren County Prosecuting Attorney’s office, seeking the additional charge against Stephens. Since being incarcerated, Stephens has been “highly combative” and violent toward other inmates and staff, Sheriff Kevin Harrison said. The incident reportedly occurred in one of the jail’s holding cells July 7. A detention officer was entering Stephens’ cell to check on him when Stephens grabbed the officer to assault him, Harrison said.Stephens put the officer in a choke hold and struck his head against a steel toilet in the cell, Harrison said. The officer sustained a minor laceration to the tissue in his left ear, according to the report.Because the alleged assault was against a law enforcement officer in the performance of his duty, the criminal charge is more severe and could come with harsher penalties, up to a maximum prison sentence of seven years if Stephens is convicted. That’s on top of potential conviction and sentencing for the other felony charges against him.
