Improvements to Stuermann Road could begin as early as next week. Wright City residents living in the Falcon Crest and Timber Trails subdivisions will continue to have access to the road as a temporary entrance will likely be built near the existing road's start off Highway H. The project's start hinges on weather and getting materials ordered. It's unknown how long the project will take to complete or the cost. "In another week or so, we should be starting out there," Public Works Director Larry Janish said at last Thursday's board of aldermen meeting. "We will be getting under way." Earlier this year, county crews made minor repairs as part of an agreement reached in May for the city to assume ownership of Stuermann Road from the county. Stuermann Road serves as the lone entrance from Highway H into the two subdivisions, located in the southwest part of the city. Janish said the city recently obtained a permit from MoDOT for stormwater improvements to be made near the road's entrance off Highway H. The proposed road improvements include a 2 1/2-inch asphalt overlay and installing inlets to help keep stormwater off the road. City crews are expected to handle most of the work, though the city will need to obtain bids for the paving portion of the project. Janish said the his crews will need two weeks to complete their portion of the road improvements, prior to the road being resurfaced. A quitclaim deed has been prepared and is waiting to be transferred to the city once all of the road improvements are completed. Through the years, the road's condition had worsened as the city and county both took the stance that the other entities had ownership rights. The much-debated issue angered property owners and builders who packed meetings at city hall and expressed disappointment that the only road that leads into Falcon Crest and Timber Trails subdivisions continued to fall into disrepair. Currently, Stuermann Road is only about 12 feet wide for the first three-tenths of a mile and is not aligned with the remainder of the wider portion closer to the subdivisions' entrances. There are approximately 250 lots in the two subdivisions combined. -recnews@centurytel.net
