The Wright City boys track team found points all over the track Thursday to finish third at the Wildcat Invitational. The Wildcats finished with 106 points, beating out 10 schools and falling behind Warrenton (115) and Orchard Farm (130).Junior Trevon Holmes led the group with a first-place finish in the high jump, where his final jump of 6 feet was a personal best.“He’s worked really hard to be there, which is great,” Wright City Head Coach Sue Wright said. “If Trevon keeps working, he’s going to go further. He’s got good technique, he just has to think through it and put his mind to it.”Junior Joe Phillips set a personal best in the shot put, tossing a final distance of 39 feet, 2 3/4 inches and finishing second.Phillips finished second in the triple jump, as well.“Every day he comes to me and says ‘I got a little bit better,’ and that’s what you want,” Wright said. “You want those kids to know where they’re at and where they need to be next time.”Freshman George Pezold continued to impress Wright after he set a personal best in the 800-meter.Pezold ran a 2:11.87, good enough for fourth. He also helped the Wildcats’ 3,200-relay team.“George has run really well,” Wright said. “He has really come along, and I think he’s going to get down below 2:10, and that is going to help.”The 3,200-relay team — which included Pezold, Jake Mueller, Stephon Norwood and Gavin Waters —  finished second behind O’Fallon Christian. The Wildcats finished their race in 8:49.75.Wright hopes Norwood can drop around 10 seconds off his 800 splits as the group prepares for the postseason.“He needs to be around 2:07 or so, but that 4X8 boys group is really strong,” she said. “We’ve been working on increasing Gavin’s stride length, and he’s going to get there. He’s a really hard worker, and that’s all you can ask for.”In the sprints, sophomore Jayden Mahaney finished second in 11.91 seconds.“He’s just a sophomore, and there are some fast people in that race,” Wright said. “But he’s really quick and he’s going to get better and better. I think he gets a little discouraged sometimes, but he’s fast. If he stays with it, he’s going to be good his junior and senior year, without a doubt.”Junior Sean McDonald finished second in the 100- and 300-meter hurdles, and Wright hopes he — as well as a few of her relay teams — can make a push for the state meet next month in Jefferson City.“I never predict after last year when I was sure the 4X8 team and Jake were going to get through to state,” she said. “I tell Sean all the time that any kid can hit a hurdle. You just have to practice the little things and hope everything goes well.”.CLEARING THE BAR — Wright City's Trevon Holmes hits his mark in the high jump Friday at the Crusader Invitational.
