Record Managing EditorOrganizers of the Relay For Life of Warren County want to see the color purple everywhere this month.Throughout the month of September, a “Paint the Town Purple” contest is being held to raise awareness and money for the annual event. Purple is the color of hope and is the traditional color cancer survivors wear at Relay For Life. The annual American Cancer Society fundraiser will be held from 1 to 11 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 26, at Black Hawk Middle School in Warrenton. The theme is “Totally Awesome ‘80s Relay.”“By ‘Painting the Town Purple’ we will be getting awareness out in the community about Relay For Life and supporting our survivors,” said Lindsey Dieckman, who is organizing the contest with co-chair Talia Scott.Residents, businesses and schools are being encouraged to participate in the contest by coming up with some creative ideas starting this week. Photos must be taken of the entry and then posted to the group’s Facebook page (relay for life of warren co paint the town purple). A name and phone number must accompany the entry. The top three pictures with the most “likes” by midnight on Sept. 21 will be displayed at this year’s Relay For Life. From there, the entry that receives the most monetary donations by 8 p.m. will win a prize. The winner will be announced following the luminaria ceremony, according to organizers.“What we are asking of residents, businesses and schools is to ‘Paint our Town Purple,’ ” Dieckman said. “You can decorate your house, mailbox, windows, make signs, get creative.”Relay For Life participants will take part in the largest fundraising walk in the nation around the school’s track. A variety of activities are held throughout the event to bring awareness to the disease and to recognize survivors and caregivers.Individuals or teams can register at www.relayforlife.org/warrencomo.Organizers hope to raise $65,000 at this year’s event.
