Relay For Life Saturday at Black Hawk School

The 20th Relay For Life of Warren County starts this Saturday, Aug. 26, at 3 p.m. at Black Hawk Middle School, 302 Kuhl Ave., Warrenton.This year’s event closing ceremonies are set for 11 p.m.Participants can walk laps and otherwise take part in the scheduled activities throughout the afternoon and evening.Organizers will introduce a new theme lap every 30 minutes. Food will be available for purchase from 11 Bravo Coffee Truck, Cardinal Nation and Kona Ice food trucks.The event has a fundraising goal of $50,000. In 2016, the Relay raised $52,369.64.One of the event’s seven committee members and organizers, Carries Biggs, said donations to the Relay For Life of Warren County stay in Warren County for programs like Road to Recovery, which provides car rides to patients who need transportation to receive care; and regular support group meetings and support programs, like Look Good, Feel Good, that help cancer patients feel their best.While Relay For Life is about remembering people who have been lost, there is an atmosphere of hope and support, she said.Biggs said in Warren County, the Relay is an enjoyable family event.“The event is open to the public,” she said. “The activities that we’re going to have will be geared to kids and young adults.”Relay For Life was created by the American Cancer Society for local communities to raise money for their local cancer programs and cancer research. The organization reports that Relays are held annually in 5,200 communities and 27 countries.The American Cancer Society says its goals for Relay For Life events are to “remember loved ones lost, honor survivors of all cancers, and raise money to help the American Cancer Society make a global impact on cancer.”To get involved, people can go the Relay For Life of Warren County website at www.relayforlife.org/warrencomo to join, start a team or donate to the effort.People may show up at any time during the event to join in, honor someone or help with the mission.2017 Relay For Life of Warren County Schedule3 to 5 p.m. — Registration opens, activities begin: dunk tank, bubble soccer (knocker ball smash), simply a princess characters, kickball tournament and music by Alex Day.5 p.m. — Next Star Dance Performance, Country Heat dancing activity with Amy Gruenefeld.6 p.m. — Opening ceremonies with the national anthem by Hannah Stevens, prayer by Pastor Hodgson, Hero of Hope Speaker Mark Hollander and “Wind Beneath My Wings” performed by Nancy Butler.6:30 p.m. — Cancer survivors are honored by taking the first lap.7 p.m. — Caregivers are honored with a ceremony and a lap.7:15 p.m. — All teams lap.7:30 p.m. — Performances by Pitch the Keys and Girls Night Out a cappella choirs from Warrenton High School.8 p.m. — Fourth Annual Carol Dieckmann Lap, and end of luminaria sales.8:30 p.m. — Luminaria ceremony to honor people touched by cancer.9:30 p.m. — Fight back ceremony and a performance by the Warrenton High School Marching Band.10 p.m. — All team raffles end.11 p.m. — Closing ceremonies.
