Record wins 12 awards in state newspaper contest

The Warren County Recordwon 12 awards, including two first-place plaques, in the 2015 Missouri Better Newspaper Contest sponsored by the Missouri Press Association and Missouri Press Foundation.The newspaper took second place in the General Excellence category, which judges all facets of the newspaper including writing, design, advertising and production.The Recordreceived first place for Best Onlne Newspaper or Website and former Sports Editor Derrick Forsythe was named Best Sports Columnist.The awards were presented Saturday, Sept. 12, at the 149th MPA Convention held in Columbia.“It’s always nice to be recognized for our work,” Managing Editor Tim Schmidt said. “While our readers are our ultimate judge, our staff works hard each week making sure we publish a quality product. These awards reflect the commitment to be the top local source for news, sports and advertising in the area.”The following are some of the judges’ comments on The Record that were made in connection with its General Excellence entries: “Good selection of news topics; good diversity. Writing generally solid. Leads direct and to the point. Layouts well done, consistent throughout. Good use of white space to separate elements. Variety and quality of photos good. Sports pages reflect diverse fans, nice use of dominant art.
