Something about the postseason brings out the best in senior Melanie Raterman. The Warrenton thrower saved her second-best toss of the season for a first-place finish in the discus during Saturday’s Class 3 sectional meet. She had edged the district field a week earlier in the same pits at Mexico High School.“When you reach the sectional meet, you have the added pressure of knowing that if you don’t land in the Top 4, you go home and your season is done,” said Coach Mike Spoede. “Melanie does a good job of handling those situations.”Raterman advanced to the MSHSAA Championships for a second straight season with a heave of 117 feet, 6 inches.“On my first throw I tried to stand, but my stand throws were going out of bounds, so I decided to do three spins, and that worked really well for me,” said Raterman. She is just happy to be healthy heading into this weekend’s state meet, after spending much of last year’s event dealing with shoulder pain.“I’m glad I’m healthy and that I can do this with all my effort and see how far I can go,” said Raterman. She acknowledges feeling strong during most of her senior season but hasn’t managed to surpass her personal best mark of 124 feet recorded as a junior. If she wishes to place among the final eight and earn all-state recognition this weekend, Raterman will have to push toward a new personal record. The top-seeded thrower is entering the competition qualified with a toss of 137 feet, 5 inches.“I want to try to medal,” said Raterman. “I think I’ll have to try throw 120-plus and shoot for a new PR.”Raterman is looking to avenge her disappointment from last May before moving on to her next endeavor as a thrower for Missouri State University.“We’d like to set another school record, and that’s what it’s going to take, is to keep getting better,” said Spoede.Sophomore Madeline Carlson has competed at state as a member of the distance relay teams, but she will be racing on her own this weekend. After posting a new personal best for a second straight week, she easily advanced with a third-place finish in the two-mile run.“A lot of times at this level with the distance runners, you’re running for place,” said Spoede. “You want to position yourself in that third or fourth spot to get to state, and she did exactly as she needed.”At districts, she shaved 15 seconds off her previous fastest time.On Saturday, Carlson improved by another eight seconds, clocking a 12:09.“It was probably one of Maddie’s smartest races of her high school career,” said Spoede. “Earning that individual ticket — what an accomplishment for her sophomore year.”Her goal had been to keep pace with Duchesne senior Maggie Noble, but she eclipsed the veteran by five seconds.“Maggie has kind of been my idol this whole year,” said Carlson. “So to be able to beat her was unexpected.”“If any kind of push was being made, she responded really well throughout the race,” said Spoede. “Then she came off the turn with a kick and was able to beat the Duchesne girl.”Carlson will need to cross another career threshold in Jefferson City if she aspires to bring home state hardware. The top qualifying time for Friday’s race is a remarkable 11:07, run by freshman Taylor Werner from St. Genevieve.“I’ve PR’d a lot lately, so I’m hoping to do it again at state and get under 12 minutes,” said Carlson.Senior Melora Broker also represented the Warriors at sectionals, competing in the open 800-meter race. She narrowly missed the cut, placing fifth with a time of 2:29.“She ran a perfect race and had herself in the mix,” said Spoede. “It just didn’t work out for her, but what a great career.”
